Filmography

Gunzi

“I work with oil paints and water colour. My theme is spiritual mysticism which I express through abstract and symbolic forms. I am inspired by the prophets and saints’ revelations, but the intention is not to illustrate their experiences. Instead, I use contemplation to reach my own inner visions. I combine universal structures and symbols when reflecting on the relationship between the visible and invisible world. It is about energies that cannot be seen with the naked eye but, nevertheless, they are part of our reality.

While working, I have studied different mystical traditions. I have familiarized myself with Christian saints such as Hildegard of Bingen and Saint Clare of Assisi, read writings by Simone Weil and Emmanuel Swedenborg and immersed myself in the visual world of medieval church art.”

My artistic practise has been very diverse - I used to work with digital techniques, probing the area between the individual and society. Some years ago, after experiencing a very difficult period, I started to paint with watercolor and the focus changed as well. Recently I started to paint with oil colour. Painting is now my main technique.

My works are presented in different contexts from traditional gallery exhibitions to events with direct audience interaction. One of my permanent public art works is a sculpture which is an instrument - the Omphalomin - which is placed in a park in eastern Helsinki (it works with light sensors). I work in community art projects as well, for example with the "Animation Station" where I make stop motion animation with the audience.

I grew up on an island in the south of Finland. After a few years of sociology studies, I realized that I wanted to become a visual artist. I have a BA in sculpture from Turku Art Academy and a MA in "Context and digital media" from Valand School of Art at Gothenburg University. I live and work in Finland, Helsinki.
